What Can Go Wrong

The common failure is a clean snap at the coil, which drops the door hard and can bend a track on the way down if the cable jumps its drum. Less common but worse: a spring that unwinds slowly and lets the door creep down on its own, which usually means the winding cone has already stripped. On older stock like this, you'll also see the stationary cone rusted onto the shaft, which turns a spring swap into a shaft-and-bearing job. We check both before we quote you a number over the phone.
What the Repair Takes
Standard torsion spring replacement means unwinding the old spring under tension, pulling it off the shaft, fitting a matched replacement rated to your door's weight, and rewinding it to the correct number of turns. On a door this age we also check the cable drums, the center bearing plate, and the track alignment, since a spring that's failed at 45 years often isn't the only worn part on the shaft. If the opener has been carrying extra load because the spring was already weak, we'll check the gears too - a burnt-out opener motor from a bad spring is a real thing, and it's the honest limitation here: sometimes the spring job uncovers a second repair we couldn't have quoted sight unseen.
